JCPenney's will ring up its final sales at select stores this weekend, bidding farewell for good to customers and employees at stores in California, Idaho and more.
A spokesperson for the longstanding department store chain confirmed the closures' locations to TODAY.com on May 20. The official closures come nearly four months after JCPenney confirmed in a February statement issued to TODAY.com that it would close a “handful” of locations by mid-year.
"While we do not have plans to significantly reduce our store count, we expect a handful of JCPenney stores to close by mid-year," the company said in February. "The decision to close a store is never an easy one, but isolated closures do happen from time to time due to expiring lease agreements, market changes or other factors."
The February statement underscored that the looming closures "are unrelated to the recent Catalyst Brands merger," a move that occurred in January 2025. In that deal, JCPenney merged with multi-brand retailer SPARC Group to create Catalyst Brands, which brought six retail names — including Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers and Lucky Brand — into one unified company.
"We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at these locations," the February statement continues. "We continue to work to make every dollar count for America’s diverse, working families and welcome them to shop at one of our ~650 other JCPenney stores across the country and at JCPenney.com."
Seven locations operated by the company, founded in 1902, will close this weekend.
