Hailey Bieber is getting candid about her road to motherhood.
In an interview for Vogue‘s cover story published May 20, Hailey Bieber recalled what it was like to welcome her first child, son Jack Blues Bieber, with her husband, Justin Bieber.
“Giving birth was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” she said.
Speaking to Vogue, Hailey Bieber explained that she began leaking amniotic fluid at 39 weeks and was induced into labor.
“That s--t was so crazy. That was not fun. They broke my water. I went into labor and I labored for a few hours. No epidural, nothing,” she said.
The whole process took 18 hours, but complications continued.
After baby Jack was born on Aug. 22, Hailey Bieber experienced a postpartum hemorrhage, which is “severe or excessive bleeding after childbirth,” per Cleveland Clinic, and occurs in about 1 to 5 of every 100 deliveries. Postpartum hemorrage can cause the body to go into shock and lead to organ failure and death, per the Cleveland Clinic.
In the story, Hailey Bieber described the experience as “a little bit scary.”
“I trust my doctor with my life,” Hailey Bieber told Vogue. “And so I had peace that I knew she would never let anything happen to me. But I was bleeding really badly, and people die, and the thought crosses your mind.”
Hailey Bieber also opened up about the postpartum period — “the most sensitive time” she’s gone through — and how it impacted her marriage.
“Your partner suddenly sees you like, ‘My woman is a god. A superhero. I could never,’” she said. “At least that was the case for me.”
She said her vision of Justin Bieber, whom she married in 2018 at the age of 21, also changed. “You see your partner so differently,” she said, adding that Justin Bieber is an amazing dad.
Justin Bieber, in an email interview, said parenthood made him feel like he was “walking in the days I always dreamed of.”
Now a mom of one, Hailey Bieber said parenthood has been her “biggest teacher” so far.
“I think you empathize with your parents a lot more. There’s so much perspective that comes with it,” she said.
